Reading with your spouse

I shared last week about my reading goals for the year. Here is another easy way to incorporate reading into your life, even if you aren’t an avid reader: read aloud with your spouse. I felt like this was an appropriate follow-up to my post on Thursday about enhancing the romance with essential oils.

Reading together before bed (or, perhaps, early in the morning if you’re those kind of people) is actually pretty intimate. It’s more engaging than simply watching a movie. It gives you plenty of opportunities to laugh together, quality snuggle time, and it stimulates conversation.

Hubbin and I used to read aloud together a lot pre-Tiny and I actually really miss it. Some of our favorites over the past eleven years were Hey Ranger! by Jim Burnett, Food Rules by Michael Pollan, Vagadonding by Rolf Potts, Boundaries by Drs. Townsend and Cloud, Mystery Train by Greil Marcus, and Night Light by Dr. James and Shirley Dobson. We tend toward short stories and essays that allow us to read one section per evening although we have definitely read novels and classic literature, too.

Even if you don’t read aloud to one another, quality time spent nestled in bed together with your own good book is definitely time well spent. So if you can’t afford a date night consider a visit to the library and an evening reading in bed.

So, as we continue our march into 2019 … and as we approach Valentine’s Day … maybe you will consider reading with your partner.

This post on She ‘Said’ doesn’t have a list of books but rather is a discussion about why reading in bed good for your marriage. Similar selections can also be read on Vogue and School of Life.

There are lots of lists and blogs out there with suggestions for reading aloud, too. Each list is totally different.
